Website domain names – transferring your names to the host

Make your website domain names live online

You’re almost there...just one more step and you can immediately have your site live online.

For a few dollars more, it's not a bad idea to buy a couple of names to protect your brand or make it easier for your visitors. For example, the .com and .net versions.

After signing up with a web host and buying your domain name, you’re ready to transfer it to your web host.

Just some quick administrative details to get your site up...

On your web host’s website (or call your web host’s tech support), you will find reference to their “nameserver addresses”. Copy these addresses down, as you will need to enter them in the registrar’s online forms (i.e. where you bought the name). The site will ask you to provide these nameserver addresses.

That’s it! You’ll receive an email confirmation but it’s generally a day or two that you can go live online if you were ready to do that.

For example, if you purchased your website name at Godaddy.com, go to their website, login, and make your domain name live or active. The registrar’s website (Godaddy in this example) will lead you along the process and ask you to type in the nameserver addresses.

Just copy/paste or type in the nameserver addresses exactly as listed on your web host’s website. You are basically telling your registrar (Godaddy in this case) where to point your name to -- i.e. your web host's nameservers.

That's it...your site should be up within 24-48 hours afterwards.
